"I just... I never thought I'd make it this far... I never planned this far ahead... and I never thought I'd meet someone like you... and I never even imagined- I never dreamed- you might want me to... I mean... don't you?"

Boy Blue 03:50
Your denim jacket's in my fist, the sting of salt on my lips Rooftops in the autumn sun, your dirty bed when we're too far gone Kickin' back and talkin' shit, guys like us we never quit Anythin' could happen tonight, I don't wanna speak, do you feel alright? Don't ever hate me, don't wish away what we've done Stay all night, get drunk and high, boys like us just wanna have fun The one I love hates my guts, works the bar but I don't drink for free Looks me dead in the eye, says I'm the one he wants, deep down I know it's not me Sweet talk, Boy Blue, feel alive when I'm next to you Run wild, live free, Boy Blue's still hatin' me Your slicked back hair like L.D.C, your eyes just poundin' into me Think my words are pretentious ploys, spends every night with a different boy My hand shakes as I fill your glass, misspend our youth, man I'm livin' fast Keep landin' hits like your Bruce Lee, come on baby throw more shade at me Don't ever hate me, don't wish away what we've done Stay all night get drunk and high, boys like us just wanna have fun The one I love hates my guts, works the bar but I don't drink for free Looks me dead in the eye, says I'm the one he wants, deep down I know it's not me Sweet talk, Boy Blue, feel alive when I'm next to you Run wild, live free, Boy Blue's still hatin' me I wake up reborn in a tricolor On the road for weeks but I still want you more and more You and I can make it out alive You and I know it's not enough to just survive I get what I want, I'm Jacob wrestlin' the angel now I can't take it back, dunno how to undo the spell Sweet talk, Boy Blue, feel alive when I'm next to you Run wild, live free, Boy Blue's still hatin' me The one I love hates my guts, works the bar but I don't drink for free Looks me dead in the eye, says I'm the one he wants, deep down I know it's not me Sweet talk, Boy Blue, feel alive when I'm next to you Run wild, live free, Boy Blue's still hatin' me

Buy Digital Track £1 GBP or more Send as Gift about This moody, tongue-in-cheek bop has Hythe’s husky baritone crooning through lusty verses into explosive melodramatic choruses. With his witty, self deprecating delivery and cynical double edged lyricism, Hythe leaves you uncertain if the song's subject is the lover on the other side of the phone or the other side of the ouiji board. An instant earworm, ‘Ghost’ is the perfect lonely anthem for Halloween in 2020. “When you’re ghosted by your crush, get crushed on by a ghost! This song came together at the piano in maybe fifteen minutes top. I’d sat down to write yet another ballad about the guy I was crushing on, but I was alone in the house and distracted by all the stuff I’d been reading about hauntings and the occult. It was an old house and, while I was working, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being watched. When I hit on the hooky chorus, the door to the room swung open all by itself (ominous creak and all), that’s when I knew I had a winner, and when I knew that was probably gonna be the best songwriting story I’d ever have too.” lyrics I thought you were coming over later My mistake, my regret to hide But I thought I had something more than him Something you were after, I knew I should have lied So how’s your lover? How’s the game you play With everyone who looks your way? Can I cut out early, can I miss your call? But when you come over, I can’t ghost you at all Give me a sign, give me the truth, cut to the chase all I need is some proof We’re so far along in this story of youth, oh are ya My ghost could you keep me alive wasting My youth away, till you give me a sign My ghost could you make me believe I’m not Waiting for nothing, could you come back to me So here we are drinking Beam and red wine And you don’t talk, you don’t think you’re mine You came for one thing that I can’t hold back So ignore my heart, later I’ll paint it black Give me a sign, give me the truth, cut to the chase all I need is some proof We’re so far along in this story of youth, oh are ya My ghost could you keep me alive wasting My youth away, till you give me a sign My ghost could you make me believe I’m not Waiting for nothing, could you come back to me (I don't need to drink all alone to know why you never answer the phone) My ghost could you keep me alive wasting My youth away, till you give me a sign My ghost could you make me believe I’m not Waiting for nothing, could you come back to me

Dorian 04:01
When I first saw you in the chapel Wreathed in flames and demon claws I couldn't believe the way you spoke Expecting applause Are you wishing, dreaming, Broken, wistful Wounded, wondering, Does he want me after all? Dorian Don't put on a show don't run back home Dorian Hold fire in your heart and let me know You want me, I want you We're winning, this time Oh you got me, I got you We'll make it out alive There's nothing selfish 'bout Escaping a life spent screaming inside We don't need darkness we don't need strife F**k playing pretend 'til the end of time Are you wishing, dreaming, Broken, wistful Wounded, wondering, Does he want me after all? Dorian Don't put on a show don't run back home Dorian Hold fire in your heart and let me know You and I we'll run 'til the morning, baby ignore all their warnings Grab what we can steal, f**k like what we have is real If you wanna quench the thirst, you gotta destroy yourself first Rock bottom is easy, I don't fear a thing when you're kissing me Are you wishing, dreaming, Broken, wistful Wounded, wondering, Does he want me after all? Dorian Don't put on a show don't run back home Dorian Hold fire in your heart and let me know You want me, I want you We're winning, this time Oh you got me, I got you We'll make it out alive

Sugar 04:12
Try, you try to smile As the radio aches a song and a lie Dance, we try to dance With whiskey and kisses trippin' us up at every little chance Is it easier to sleep now that you're away from me? Is it easier to believe we were never meant to be? Is this just half of the story half of the time? I just wanted to be wanted, could barely keep it inside Half of a kiss and half of a lie The rush like sugar when I drown in his eyes Night, can't shut my eyes, No one wants to hear my songs, no one wants to hear my lies Dream, do you still dream? It's hard for me now I'm livin' in one, and nothings what it seems Is it easier to sleep now that you're away from me? Is it easier to believe we were never meant to be? Is this just half of the story half of the time? I just wanted to be wanted, could barely keep it inside Half of a kiss and half of a lie The rush like sugar when I drown in his eyes Is it easier for me to write a song than leave you be? Boy Blue dreamin' in the drink, this is all you meant to me Is this just half of the story half of the time? I just wanted to be wanted, could barely keep it inside Half of a kiss and half of a lie The rush like sugar when I drown in his eyes

about

Joe Hythe has had an explosive first season on the LGBTQ music scene. Releasing dreamy debut single ‘Dorian’ in late September, swiftly followed by Halloween bop ‘Ghost’ and adorable accompanying music video, Hythe has appeared seemingly from nowhere with “a belt full of torch songs.” Now comes epic pop fantasy ‘Boy Blue’, Hythe’s first EP and part one of a larger two EP project that has been four years in the making.

“I originally imagined a full album, it was one of those ideas that sort of springs fully formed into your mind. I fell for a bad boy, I started writing songs about him, I started designing videos in my head, I changed how I dressed, I changed what I drank, I changed how I sang. I got over the boy pretty quickly but it was too late to get over the project that was ‘Boy Blue’. My life is kind of ugly and kind of sad but it’s also funny, and beautiful, and cinematic. I wanted to glorify my experiences, fictionalise them, make them into something more than sad memories, that seemed the only way to do justice to the intensity of feeling that a crush like mine brought on.”

Hythe began composing songs on the guitar and the piano before transforming these barebones songs into melodramatic pop anthems on Garageband in his father's shed. After a year of working alone, Hythe showed his demos to school friend Richard Barr- now living in Berlin and performing and producing music under the moniker Wikihow Adventure Cruise- and the two began to work collaboratively and (most often) remotely, transforming the rough demos into glossy ear porn.

“It wasn’t until early 2020 that we decided to split the album in two. I’d always imagined the album as a record of two acts, two sides, and this was a way for me to enforce that. This first EP is the more romantic, it’s the fantasy, the dream, the honeymoon, but it’s unhappy ending leads beautifully into the flipside that is the next EP. If you think of love just through the lens of rom-coms and pop music you’re never gonna get the full picture. I think our cultural obsession with happy endings limits our human experience and prevents us from true self-reflection and empathy for those we fall for. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s self-loathing. ‘Boy Blue’ is all about that rush of lust-fueled obsession and self-loathing that comes from an unrequited crush, and how that rush gives way to bittersweet lucidity. With these songs, I’ve bottled that rush.”
